According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), “Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and animals. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. In humans, it can cause a wide range of symptoms, some of which may be mistaken for other diseases. Some infected persons, however, may have no symptoms at all. Without treatment, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death.”

While Leptospirosis is on the rise in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria making landfall, CNN just reports there are 76 known cases, including some deaths. The exposure can be through drinking water. However, it can also be through fruits and vegetables that have been in contact with rat urine and have not been thoroughly washed. The old folks in our neighborhood used to caution us about it. People who buy their food at the grocery store and do not grow their own may not even know about this route of exposure.

Water filtration is imperative! Sustainability and prolonged use were just two key factors we looked at when selecting the filtration system for the current water conditions in Puerto Rico. With the proper cleaning and care, just washing with a kitchen scrub pad, this filter will last for years to come.

You may be asking, “How does it work?”

The filter removes suspended solids, pathogenic bacteria, cysts, organic chemicals and improves taste and odor. The filter is silver impregnated to prevent bacteria growth (mitosis) and is self-sterilizing. The ceramic shell is manufactured to balance flow rate and consistent pore size in order to provide maximum filtration efficiency. The core of the filter contains coconut shell based granular activated carbon to reduce organic chemicals and improve the color, taste, and odor of drinking water. This filter element is designed for gravity filter use and other low-pressure applications.

Will it address Leptospirosis?  YES 99.9999%, the results are in the Performance Data provided by the manufacturer.

  1. How much is the process to filter out the water and what cost is it to an individual person or house can you send me a bucket that I see in your video to try on our Rivers Water here in Hawaii to kill the bacteria
