According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), “Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and animals. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. In humans, it can cause a wide range of symptoms, some of which may be mistaken for other diseases. Some infected persons, however, may have no symptoms at all. Without treatment, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death.”
While Leptospirosis is on the rise in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria making landfall, CNN just reports there are 76 known cases, including some deaths. The exposure can be through drinking water. However, it can also be through fruits and vegetables that have been in contact with rat urine and have not been thoroughly washed. The old folks in our neighborhood used to caution us about it. People who buy their food at the grocery store and do not grow their own may not even know about this route of exposure.
